What is it?

Humanin is a 24-amino-acid mitochondrial-derived peptide (MDP) encoded by a short open reading frame within the mitochondrial 16S ribosomal RNA gene (MT-RNR2). It was first identified in 2001 during functional expression screening of a cDNA library, and was among the earliest peptides shown to originate from the mitochondrial genome rather than the nuclear genome.

In preclinical and in vitro research models, Humanin has been studied for its interaction with apoptotic regulators and receptor complexes, and for its role in retrograde signaling between mitochondria and the nucleus. These characteristics have made it a compound of interest in experimental work on cellular stress response, mitochondrial signaling, and age-associated metabolic change.
